Crypto AEO consultant: how exchanges, wallets and stablecoins get cited by ChatGPT
"Which crypto exchange is safest in Germany?" used to be a Google query. Now it gets asked to ChatGPT, and the answer names three platforms with no page of links attached. Here is what a crypto AEO consultant does about that.
Crypto brands have more reason to care about AI answers than almost anyone. Paid acquisition is restricted or banned on most major ad platforms, so organic discovery carries the load. And a growing share of that discovery now happens in a single AI response rather than across ten blue links. If you are not in the answer, you are often not in the consideration set at all.
This guide covers the consumer and CeFi side of crypto: exchanges, brokers, wallets, on-ramps, card products and stablecoin issuers. If you run a protocol or a chain, the Web3 and blockchain guides fit better.
The prompts that decide crypto buying
When I benchmark a crypto brand, the prompt set usually covers five kinds of question per topic. Definition: what is a regulated crypto exchange? Comparison: Kraken vs Coinbase for EU users. Alternatives: alternatives to Binance in France. Use case: best wallet for holding stablecoins long term. Buying: cheapest way to buy bitcoin with a bank transfer in Spain.
Notice how many of those are trust questions. Licence, jurisdiction, safety, fees. That is what makes crypto AEO different from the generic version.
The licensing accuracy problem
In MiCA research I ran through ColdChain, Binance appeared in roughly 76% of AI-generated answers about EU crypto exchanges despite not holding a valid MiCA licence. Licensed competitors were not just losing visibility. AI engines were confidently pointing EU users at a provider that could not legally serve them.
That happens because models describe what their sources describe, and most of the web's coverage of crypto exchanges predates MiCA. Fixing it means getting your licensing status stated clearly, consistently and recently in the places the engines read: your own site, regulator registers, data platforms, comparison sites and trade press. A crypto AEO consultant who doesn't audit accuracy is treating a regulated brand like an ecommerce store.
What a crypto AEO consultant actually changes
Your own answer pages
Most exchange and wallet sites bury the facts AI engines need: supported countries, licences, fee schedules, custody model, proof of reserves. I restructure those into pages that answer one question each, plainly, with the date and source on the page. They also tend to clear compliance faster than marketing copy, because they describe rather than promote.
Your learn hub
Many exchanges have huge "learn" sections that rank for nothing and get cited for less, because they explain the same 200 topics as every competitor. The citable version is narrower: content only you can publish, like original market data, platform-specific guides and regulatory explainers for the markets you operate in.
The third-party sources
Crypto answers lean heavily on CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap listings, review and comparison sites, crypto media, and community discussion on Reddit. If your profile on those is thin or outdated, the model's description of you will be too. The benchmark tells you which ones matter for your prompts so you're not chasing all of them.
Entity consistency
Name, legal entity, licence numbers, founding date, headquarters, products. When those vary across sources, models hedge or get it wrong. Structured data on your site and corrections on the profiles you control close most of that gap.
Stablecoin and RWA issuers: the open categories
Young categories are where AEO pays off fastest. Across a 50,000-brand study of ChatGPT topic ownership, only 15.2% of topics had a clear owner. In stablecoins, tokenized treasuries and RWA, buyers are asking questions no brand owns yet. The first issuer to publish a clear, sourced answer tends to become the default citation, and that lead compounds.
What results look like
Expect the benchmark in the first couple of weeks. Engines that pull live results, like Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, can reflect changes within weeks. How ChatGPT describes your whole category moves over quarters. On the SEO side that underpins it, the kind of outcome to expect is what ColdChain's Rootstock case study shows: +41.6% organic traffic over twelve months with zero paid spend. If anyone guarantees you a ChatGPT placement, walk. Nobody controls that.
If you're comparing providers, I've ranked the crypto SEO and AEO agencies I'd shortlist, with the bias of running one of them clearly disclosed.
Frequently asked questions
What does a crypto AEO consultant do?
A crypto AEO consultant gets exchanges, wallets, stablecoin issuers and other crypto brands cited accurately in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. That means benchmarking citation share against competitors, fixing how AI describes licensing, fees and availability, and strengthening the third-party sources AI engines rely on for crypto answers.
Why do AI engines recommend unlicensed crypto exchanges?
Models describe what their sources describe, and much of the web's crypto coverage predates regimes like MiCA. In ColdChain research, Binance appeared in about 76% of AI answers about EU crypto exchanges despite lacking a valid MiCA licence. Correcting that requires clear, current licensing information across your own site and the sources the models read.
Can crypto AEO work within marketing and compliance restrictions?
Yes. The content AI engines cite most for crypto brands is factual: supported countries, licences, fees, custody and how products work. That descriptive content usually clears compliance more easily than promotional copy.
Which sources do AI engines use for crypto answers?
Common sources include CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap listings, comparison and review sites, crypto media such as Cointelegraph, regulator registers, official project sites and Reddit discussions. The mix varies by prompt, which is why a benchmark should map sources per topic.
